Yellow Watermelon Kava-Rita - A Summer Mocktail Worth Making

Yellow Watermelon Kava-Rita - A Summer Mocktail Worth Making - Melo

Some drinks look good. Some drinks taste good. Some drinks actually do something.

This one does all three.

The Yellow Watermelon Kava-Rita started as an experiment — what happens when you build a proper summer mocktail around Melo Tahitian Lime instead of tequila? The answer is something crisp, tropical, slightly salty, and genuinely refreshing — with the added benefit of kava's calming effect settling in about 10 minutes after your last sip.

Here's how to make it.

The Recipe

Yellow Watermelon Kava-Rita
Serves 1 — scales easily for a crowd

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup yellow watermelon, chopped
  • 2–3 slices cucumber
  • ½ oz agave syrup
  • A pinch of sea salt
  • ⅔ can Melo Tahitian Lime
  • Ice
  • Garnishes — lime wheel, cucumber ribbon, fresh mint, or a salted rim

Method:

Step 1 — Muddle
Add the yellow watermelon and cucumber slices to a cocktail shaker or sturdy glass. Muddle firmly until the watermelon releases its juice and the cucumber breaks down. You want color and liquid, not pulp.

Step 2 — Add the agave and salt
Pour in the agave syrup and add a pinch of sea salt. The salt is the secret — it lifts the sweetness of the watermelon and the citrus of the Tahitian Lime in a way that makes the whole drink taste more intentional. Don't skip it.

Step 3 — Shake or stir
Add ice to the shaker and give it a short, sharp shake — about 10 seconds. You're chilling and combining, not diluting. If you don't have a shaker, stir well with ice in the glass.

Step 4 — Add the Melo
Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Pour in ⅔ of a can of Melo Tahitian Lime slowly, down the side of the glass to preserve the carbonation. The sparkling fizz is part of the drink.

Step 5 — Garnish and serve
Add your garnish — a lime wheel on the rim, a thin cucumber ribbon, a sprig of mint, or a salted rim if you want to lean into the margarita energy. Serve immediately while cold and fizzy.

Why it works

Tahitian Lime is already the most margarita-adjacent of the Melo flavors — crisp, bright, citrus-forward with a clean finish. Paired with yellow watermelon — which is sweeter and more delicate than red — and the cool cucumber, the result is something that genuinely tastes like a considered cocktail rather than a mocktail compromise.

The agave syrup brings the elements together without adding much sweetness — just enough to balance the citrus. And the kava effect means that by the time you've finished your first glass, you actually feel something. That's the part no margarita can match.

Yellow watermelon vs red — does it matter?

Yes, but not critically. Yellow watermelon is sweeter and less watery than red, with a slightly honey-like flavor that pairs particularly well with the citrus profile of Tahitian Lime. If you can find it — farmers markets and Sprouts usually carry it in summer — use it.

If you can't, red watermelon works perfectly well. Strain out a little more of the liquid when muddling if it's very watery, and the result will be close enough.

Scaling for a group

This drink scales beautifully for gatherings. For a pitcher serving 4–6 people:

  • 2 cups yellow watermelon, muddled
  • 8–10 cucumber slices, muddled
  • 2 oz agave syrup
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • 2–3 cans Melo Tahitian Lime

Muddle the watermelon and cucumber in the bottom of a pitcher. Add agave, salt, and ice. Pour in the Melo slowly and stir gently. Garnish the pitcher with lime wheels and cucumber ribbons and let guests pour their own over ice.

This is the kind of drink that makes a summer dinner party feel considered without requiring a bartender.
